I became a member of the Amputee Support Association Sunshine Coast when my mother, Doris Sommer, had her legs amputated, 8 years ago.
Cliff went to visit Mum when she was at Caloundra hospital for rehab.
We found the association invaluable, as part of her adjusting to life as an amputee, and to support the family. I wanted to get Mum involved in the meetings and thankfully she wanted to go.
We would help sell raffle tickets for the Easter raffle, which Mum enjoyed doing, while she was able.
Mum passed away 2 years ago and it didn’t feel right for me to stop going to the meetings. You become emotionally involved, and this is one way to show gratitude to the association. I was supporting the association in any way I could, like selling raffle tickets at Easter.
I wasn’t looking for anything else to do, as I was already quite busy.
We own our own retail shop and I am a massage therapist and Reiki practitioner. I volunteer for Reiki Australia as a project team member and as the accounts officer. I am also carer for my stepfather, Russell.
I knew Maureen couldn’t continue as the secretary due to health issues. After being spoken to by committee members, I decided I could be the new secretary, with assistance.
Tony is membership officer
Maureen is newsletter editor
Joy staples the pages together and gets the newsletters in the post
Chanelle is assistant secretary and looking after the website
A special thank you to these helpers, plus anyone else who contributes in any way
I hope I can continue doing as well as Maureen has done as our secretary.
We enjoyed our lunch at Cocos on 9th September
